Some notes & thoughts on Joli OS (first impressions)

So I fired up a Joli OS installation in VMware Fusion.

The process is very easy and straight-forwarded for that matter.

After installing and logging into the system locally I’m asked to register for a jolicloud-account, bummer. Well, they want to store settings and stuff in the cloud, so I did.

Last things first I decided to get me a console which can be found in “Local Apps”. If not do a search for “Terminal” and add it yourself.

  • Check if we are up-to-date: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
  • I want to build something (namely VMware-Tools), so apt-get install build-essential is a good point to start with.
  • VMware-Tools is typically installed via mounted iso images: sudo mount /dev/hdc /cdrom

This is were I found myself wondering why does it seem to have so many different mount-points?

We have: /cdrom, /mnt/ (which is an empty folder), /media (which only contains floppy0)

Is there a special pattern behind that? I don’t think so…

More to follow.
